Stage 04 / Orbit / GEO and AEO

Be the answer in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews

When someone in Cyprus asks an AI engine who to call, the engine picks a handful of sources. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO), sometimes sold as AI SEO, are the work of becoming one of them. It is early, so we tell you what is known, what we test and what we measure.

Stage 04 / Orbit / What we measure

Citations
How often your pages are cited in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity for your tracked questions.
Mentions
Whether your business is named in the answer at all, with or without a link.
AI referrals
Visits and leads arriving from AI engines, tagged separately in analytics.
Answer share
Of the questions on your map, the share where you appear versus competitors, rechecked monthly.

A growing share of buying questions never reaches a results page. Someone types "best accountant for a small company in Limassol" into ChatGPT, or Google shows an AI Overview above the ten blue links. The answer names two or three businesses and cites a few pages. Everyone else is invisible for that query.

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the work of making your pages the sources those answers cite. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is writing your pages so the answer can be lifted directly. Both build on solid SEO. Neither has a rulebook yet, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. We run it as a measured programme: hypotheses, changes, and a readout of what moved.

What generative engine optimisation (GEO) and AEO are

AI engines answer a question by retrieving pages, reading them and writing a summary with sources. To be retrieved, a page has to be findable, which is SEO. To be cited, it has to say something clear, specific and consistent that the engine can use. To be quoted, it helps to state the answer in one plain paragraph under the question, then support it.

GEO covers the whole system: entities (what the web says your business is, where it is, what it does), consistency across your site, directories and profiles, structured data, and content that answers the questions people ask engines rather than the keywords they type into Google. AEO is the writing discipline inside it. This page and our FAQ are built that way on purpose.

What is known, what we test

Known: engines favour pages that rank well already, load fast, state facts plainly, carry structured data and are corroborated elsewhere. Google AI Overviews cite pages from the same index as normal search. ChatGPT and Perplexity use live web search for local and commercial questions and tend to cite recent, specific pages.

Tested, not settled: how much FAQ schema helps, whether listing your business in AI facing directories moves citations, the effect of author and organisation pages, and how quickly an engine picks up a new page. We run these as experiments on a small set of questions, in Greek and English, and keep what works.

Unknown: exact ranking factors inside any engine. We do not claim to know them. We measure outcomes instead.

How we do it

  1. Question map. The questions people in Cyprus actually ask AI engines about your category, in Greek and English. Different from a keyword list: longer, more specific, often comparative.
  2. Baseline. We ask each engine the questions on the map, record who is cited, and log it. That is month zero.
  3. Entity clean up. Same name, address, services and description across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Organisation and LocalBusiness schema that says the same thing.
  4. Answer pages. One page per question cluster, direct answer first, supporting detail, FAQ schema, internal links. Written by people who know the Cyprus market.
  5. Corroboration. Mentions from Cyprus press, associations and partners so engines see other sources agreeing with your pages.
  6. Monthly recheck. Same questions, same engines, changes logged and reported with rankings from the SEO readout.

Why Cyprus is a good place to start early

Competition for AI citations in Cyprus is close to zero. Most local sites are not written to answer questions, are inconsistent across profiles, and have no structured data. The first firms in each category to fix that tend to be cited by default, because the engine has few other good sources.

Two languages help. An answer page in Greek about a service in Nicosia has very little competition, and engines answering Greek questions need Greek sources. Expat and international searches run in English and are where the bigger competitors sit, so we usually start with Greek questions for local services and English for tourism, property and professional services aimed at foreign clients.

Tourism questions are often asked from abroad before the trip: "best boat trip from Paphos with children", "car hire at Larnaca airport without a deposit". Being the source for those in spring pays through the whole summer.

Who it is for, and who should wait

It fits businesses that already rank reasonably, have a real point of difference and sell something people ask questions about: clinics, law and accounting firms, property, tourism, specialist trades. It fits less well if the site is slow or thin, in which case the money is better spent on web design and SEO first. We will say which in the flight check.

Questions about geo and aeo in Cyprus

01What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?

Making your pages the sources that AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite when they answer a question. It combines SEO, consistent facts about your business across the web, structured data and pages written to answer questions directly.

02What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

Writing pages so that an engine can lift the answer straight out: a clear question heading, a short direct answer, supporting detail, and FAQ schema. It is the writing discipline inside GEO.

03Is AI SEO different from normal SEO?

It builds on it. Pages that rank, load fast and answer clearly are the ones engines cite. GEO adds entity consistency, question focused content and citation tracking. We run both in one programme and one readout.

04How do you measure results if there are no rankings?

We ask each engine a fixed set of questions every month and record who is cited and mentioned. We also tag visits and leads that arrive from AI engines in analytics. Both go in the monthly readout next to your Google rankings.

05Can you guarantee my business appears in ChatGPT?

No. Nobody controls what an engine cites. We can show the baseline, the changes and the movement, and we choose questions where the competition is thin enough that appearing is realistic.
