Choose a marketing agency in Cyprus by asking what it measures, not what it promises. The right agency sets up tracking before spending, works in Greek and English, understands that Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos are different markets with different seasons, reports leads and cost per lead every month, and does not lock you into a long contract. Everything else, the awards, the office, the size of the team, is decoration.
This post gives you the questions to ask, the answers to look for, and the warning signs that cost Cyprus business owners money every year. It is written by an agency, so read it as one side of the argument and check it against the others.
Start with what you need, not with what they sell
Before you call anyone, write down three things.
What a customer is worth. An average sale, multiplied by how often a customer buys. This decides what you can pay for a lead and therefore what any marketing has to achieve.
Where you are now. Do you have a website that loads fast on a phone? Is anything tracking leads to their source? Do you know what you spend across all suppliers and what comes back? Most Cyprus businesses we meet cannot answer the third question, which is the problem the right agency fixes first.
What you need first. No site or a slow one: web design. Need customers this month: paid ads. Paying for every lead for ever: SEO. Several suppliers and no single view: consulting. An agency that recommends its most expensive service before hearing the answers is selling, not advising.
Ten questions to ask every agency
Ask these in the first meeting and write the answers down.
- How will you track leads back to their source? Look for GA4, conversion tracking, call tracking and form tracking, set up before spending. If the answer is vague, the reports will be too.
- Show me a monthly report you send a client. Names removed is fine. Look for spend, leads, cost per lead and decisions. If it is clicks, impressions and likes, walk away.
- How do you handle Greek and English? Look for separate keyword research, separate pages and campaigns, native writing. If they translate with a plugin or ignore Greek, they are missing half the market.
- What do you know about my city? Limassol's English corporate market, Nicosia's Greek professional market, Larnaca's airport trade, Paphos's tourism season. A generic answer means a generic plan.
- Who will actually run my account? The person in the meeting is often not the person doing the work. Ask to meet them.
- Who owns the ad accounts, the website and the domain? You should. Some Cyprus providers keep accounts in their own name and charge to release them.
- What is the contract length? Web design is a project. Monthly services should be month to month with notice. Twelve month lock ins for a monthly service protect the agency, not you.
- Is your fee separate from the ad budget? It must be, in writing. A package where you cannot see how much reaches Google or Meta cannot be judged.
- What would you not do for me? A good agency says no to things that will not return their cost. An agency with no answer will take any budget.
- What happens if it does not work? Look for a plan: what they would change, when they would tell you, how they would decide to stop.
The warning signs
Some patterns repeat across the Cyprus market.
Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. An agency that guarantees page one either picks terms nobody searches or does not intend to be around when the guarantee comes due.
Reports of activity. Posts published, keywords tracked, impressions served. Activity is what they did. Results are what changed. You are paying for the second.
A proposal with no tracking line. If the plan starts with ads or content and never mentions how leads will be measured, the agency does not expect to be judged on leads.
One language. An English only agency in Cyprus is ignoring the local market. A Greek only agency is ignoring the international one. Which matters depends on your customers, but the agency should ask.
Stock photos and templates. If their own site is a template with stock images, expect the same for yours.
The office and the awards. Neither predicts cost per lead. Some of the best marketing in Cyprus is done by three people in a small room. Some of the worst comes from large offices with a trophy cabinet.
Full service or specialist
If you have one channel and a modest budget, hire the best specialist for that channel and judge them on cost per lead. A good Google Ads freelancer beats a mediocre full service agency every time.
If you spend across several channels or suppliers, you need one accountable partner with one readout. That can be a full service studio that runs everything, or a marketing consultant who sets the measures, manages your specialists and reports to you monthly. What you want to avoid is four suppliers, four reports, and nobody responsible for the total.
Local versus international
Location matters less than market knowledge. An agency abroad that understands Greek search, Cyprus seasonality and the four cities can do good work remotely. An agency abroad that treats Cyprus as a small English speaking market will underperform a local team. A local agency that ignores Greek search is no better.
The test is simple: ask for examples of Greek and English work, ask about the tourist season, ask about the difference between a Nicosia customer and a Paphos one. The answers tell you whether they know the place.
What a fair engagement looks like
A fair engagement in Cyprus looks like this.
- A free or low cost first review that ends in a written plan, whether or not you hire them.
- Tracking built before any spend.
- Fees quoted separately from ad budgets, in writing, with what is included.
- A fixed price for fixed scope work such as a website, and month to month terms for ongoing work.
- Greek and English handled as two markets.
- A one page monthly readout with spend, leads, cost per lead, what changed and what to decide.
- Accounts, domain and content owned by you.
- A clear answer to "when would you tell me to stop".
That is the standard we hold ourselves to, and it is a reasonable standard to hold anyone to.
How to compare two proposals
Put them side by side on the questions above. Then do one more thing: call a client of each. Not the reference they give you, one you find yourself by looking at work they have claimed. Ask what the monthly report contains and whether they know their cost per lead. Ten minutes on the phone is worth more than any pitch deck.
The short version
Choose a marketing agency in Cyprus on what it measures. Tracking before spend, Greek and English as two markets, knowledge of your city and season, a monthly readout of leads and cost per lead, no long contracts, and your accounts in your name. Ignore the office, the awards and the size of the team. Ask the ten questions, watch for the warning signs, and call a client.
